Career Profile:
Makeup Artist #1231
Doing makeup for people involved in television commercials, print ads and film is the job of this makeup artist. She is an entrepreneur who has worked for many famous people. She traveled with Bob Dole on the campaign trail and did his makeup when needed. The "Maytag repairman" is another one of her famous clients. Communication and tactfulness, she says, are the most important elements of the job. Communication is essential when talking with directors and producers about makeup needs. Tactfulness comes in handy when the people on camera have a different opinion than their director when it comes to makeup. Reaching a happy compromise in those situations is important. An artistic flair and a good eye are needed to do this job. The ability to look at a face and picture what it will look like with makeup and under specific lighting is a great talent. A college education is suggested, but not required. A makeup artist usually travels, works unusual hours and is in some unusual situations. For this reason, flexibility is key. Good people skills and love of tight deadlines also contribute to a successful makeup artist.
