Career Profile:
Designer--Commercial & Residential Space
In this session, students will interact with a designer who says choosing a career was easy, since she has always had an interest in the design area. After high school, she studied interior design at one of Iowa's community colleges. There she learned about color, drafting, art history, computers, math and communication. During college, she worked in a furniture store and her first job after college was in a paint store. Both of these jobs gave her some experiences that have helped her in her current position. She now designs interior space for commercial and residential properties. Her job duties include getting bids to builders or homeowners, scheduling installation and some drafting for custom-built furniture. She says interior designers must be organized, patient and enjoy working with people. She enjoys seeing the end results of her work and knows pleasant interiors make people feel more comfortable.
