Career Profile: Environmental Specialist #1203
This native Iowan says he has always felt a kinship with the environment. Growing up on a farm taught him how humans interact with nature. This interest led him to study geography in college and graduate school, where he specialized in environmental studies.
Now he spends his days inspecting a variety of sites in 18 counties for the State of Iowa. He specializes in air quality, solid waste, agricultural sites and underground storage tanks found at gas stations. He says about half of his inspections are surprise inspections. After each inspection, he is responsible for the appropriate paperwork and writing a report.
He says students interested in environmental science need to be inquisitive, have a well-rounded education and should read the newspaper every day! After several years in this career, he says he is still excited about his work and feels lucky to be on the front lines of environmentalism.
