Career Profile:
Deputy Group Commander #1193

The US Coast Guard is one of five branches in the US Armed Forces. The Coast Guard’s duties include search and rescue, aids to navigation, ice operation, military readiness, maritime law enforcement, marine safety and boating safety. No unit of the Coast Guard is set up to do only one mission. For example, the Coast Guard along the Mississippi River may primarily be working on maintaining buoys and lights that aid towboats to safely navigate the river, but may be called to perform a search and rescue operation in an emergency situation.

The educational qualifications necessary to join the US Coast Guard vary. If a person wants to enlist in the junior enlisted ranks, a high school diploma or an equivalency test is the only requirement. To become an officer a person must earn a Bachelor's degree; or attend the Coast Guard Academy; or just enlist, serve for a certain period of time, get an Associate's Degree, then go to officer candidate school.

How hard a person wants to work and where he/she is willing to go determine the opportunities available in the Coast Guard. Promotions are based on knowledge, exams and performance. The Coast Guard is the only branch of the armed services that has no gender requirements. Women can serve in any part of the Coast Guard. The men and women of the US Coast Guard enjoy the privilege of being able to help people while serving the in the US Armed Forces.
