Director #1079 - Tape Number: 1079

Career Profile:
Director #1079

A high school class in art history sparked the interest of this art gallery director. Her teacher combined elements of photography, sculpture, painting, theater and performance art in the class. Creativity was encouraged, and what she studied in high school helped steer her towards a fulfilling career in the arts.

In college, she studied both biology and art history. Analytical and writing skills were strengthened in her science classes, and crossed over to her love of art.

After graduating with a degree in American art history, she gave herself five years to experiment with different jobs. She taught art classes, worked in a science library, and assisted in an art museum. She realized that art history was the element of these jobs that really made her happy.

She went to graduate school and earned a Ph.D. This advanced degree enabled her to be hired as a curator and later as the director of an art gallery at a college in Iowa. Interpreting the world visually and spatially is an element of her work that she especially enjoys.
