Career Profile:
Commercial Photographer #1198

This commercial photographer's first published photo appeared in his high school yearbook. It wasn't long before he was photographing Presidents Ford and Carter. The native Iowan enlisted in the Navy after high school and attended the Naval School of Photography. He was sent to Washington, D.C. and worked as a photographer for Naval Intelligence. This assignment gave him the freedom to go anywhere in the White House!

After his stint in the nation's capital he moved to New York City, where he assisted a photographer for one year. The next eight years were spent working in photography studios in Iowa. Today, he owns his own business and has other photographers working for him.

Now he spends most of his time on location, taking photos for advertising agencies, design studios, publishing companies and corporations. He says students interested in photography should study art because the technical skills can be learned later. After many years in the business, he says it's still a thrill to see his work published.
