This employment interviewer studied developmental disabilities at one of Iowa's community colleges. For the first year of school she took classes in algebra, psychology and child development. The second year, she completed three practicums in a metropolitan area. The practicums provided excellent real-world experience, and helped her develop skills she would need for her career.
After graduation, she moved out of state and worked in property management for nine years. When the chance came to move back to Iowa, she took it. She started out in direct care (feeding, bathing and giving medications to clients) at a facility in her hometown. She quickly became a supervisor, and then an employment interviewer.
The ability to communicate, listen and be patient are very important skills to have in this line of work. She also uses computers, evaluates clients, develops job sites, organizes a budget and makes sure a site will be a safe and ethical environment for the client.
This job is a good example of how technical and personal skills are combined to be successful. She says, "When a perfect match has been made between a client and employer, there's satisfaction."
