This cytotechnologist grew up in a family with careers in the medical field, but started her career as a special education teacher. She loved kids and liked teaching, but felt restless and ready for a career change after five years in the classroom.
Her mother works in a hospital laboratory and suggested she check out cytotechnology, the science of identifying cancerous cells from a slide. She took a tour to find out a more and decided it was the kind of change she needed. After spending a year in college beefing up her science background, she spent another 12 months in a cytotechnology program. She began her new career in cytology at the hospital she had visited two years earlier. She describes herself as being nitpicky about details and enjoys the record keeping aspect of the job. This cytotechnologist loves to read and learn about new developments in cancer research.
