Due to the nature of this engineering technician's work, his job title is Tonal Director. As the Tonal Director of an Iowa pipe organ factory, he is responsible for the sound of the instruments the company builds. He meets with the firm's customers to learn their needs and wishes. He then designs the pipes, specifying their materials and dimensions. When the pipes are made, he supervises the "voicing", the process of adjusting the pipes so that they produce the proper sound. When the preliminary part of this work is done in the factory, he travels to the customer's location to finish the voicing work in the room in which the organ is installed. This is a very important part of his job, because this final part of the process assures that the sound of the organ will exactly match the acoustics of the room.
He loves working with people and enjoys working on such beautiful musical instruments. He does find the travel somewhat difficult, because he is often away from home for weeks at a time, traveling all over the United States. To some extent he is able to arrange his own calendar, yet he can tell you which of his wife's concerts and music programs he has had to miss during the past year.
