Library Director #1127 - Tape Number: 1127

Career Profile:
Library Director #1127

This library director took a summer job at a library more than 20 years ago and has been hooked ever since. She enjoys the work because she comes in contact with a variety of people and is able to assist them with their library needs. Once she realized her desire for a career in library work, she completed her Bachelor's degree in English and continued to pursue a Master's degree in Library Science.

It is possible to become a library director immediately out of college depending on the size of town and where the library is located. However, this library director climbed her way up the ladder and began as a children's librarian, then a regional consultant and eventually the library director.

Because her duties involve overseeing the daily operations of the library, she spends very little time in the technical areas, such as the reference desk, but spends a great amount of time managing volunteers and staff. Some of her duties include developing and helping staff implement new programs, publicizing new programs to the community, being a liaison to the community, being an advisor to the board of trustees and developing the library budget. She says every day is different and she enjoys her job very much.
