Growing up on a farm had a lot to do with this farmer’s choice of careers. He began his farming venture right after graduating from high school. Different areas of his career include livestock, corn, beans and a feed business. The seasons dictate his daily duties. Taking care of the livestock is a year-round task but in the spring he adds planting to his routine. In the fall, harvesting fills his days. His feed business is a side venture that taps into his business knowledge. The company provides livestock feed to farmers in surrounding areas.
As a child and a young farmer, he has watched farming technology grow and mature along with his fields. He uses sophisticated computers to measure different aspects of his harvest. A computer disk in his combine shows him the amount of corn or beans a field will yield along with other important information. His personal computer is a tool he uses to analyze this information. The computer also allows him to communicate with other farmers and check grain prices. He advises students who are considering a future in farming to know a little about everything from accounting to business to medicine. Hands-on experience is also a key factor. This farmer has successfully combined the high tech world of computers with the age-old techniques of farming.
