This entrepreneur is a seasoned traveler. She has spent time all over the country searching for antiques and collectibles for her antique shop. Her experiences on the road sparked an interest that led to the opening of her own business, a bed and breakfast. Being a guest so often herself, she knows what a customer likes and dislikes in a B& B.
This type of lodging offers a more personal, at-home atmosphere than the typical highway hotel. She started out by getting financing, then took bids from contractors to restore a beautiful old mansion in a small Iowa community. She and her husband treated the historic home like a piece of fine furniture. The renovation of eight guestrooms included redecorating, refinishing the original wood, and making sure the plumbing and electricity were up to date.
A strong sense of visual detail and aesthetics is crucial for this type of work. Organization is also very helpful. Her reservation system is key to finding out why people are in the area (a special event, relaxation, business). Knowing as many details as possible about a guest helps the host be sure their stay is as comfortable as possible.
In addition to handling the office matters, this hotel/motel manager cooks gourmet breakfasts and desserts, cleans rooms, and chats with guests. The most enjoyable part of operating her own B & B is the people, getting to know each visitor personally and treating them right.
