Career Profile:
Adult Day Center Director #1036
This adult day center director credits a close relationship with her grandparents as the beginning of her search for a career. As a high school student, she worked at a nursing home. It was a great experience, but watching once vital, active people get sick and become inactive, made her sad. A friend began studying occupational therapy, and she decided this field would allow her to improve the lives of the elderly and ill. Her first job involved helping people with long term mental health issues. She earned a certificate in rehabilitation facility administration and soon learned of a new type of care for the elderly. Adult day care provides activities and care for elderly persons during the day. She began directing a program like this thirteen years ago and has been there ever since. While working full-time, she spent 12 years earning her bachelor degree. She supervises staff, works with families, handles finances, and completes the mountains of paperwork required for most clients. When she's not working, she enjoys reading, crafts and is involved in a local storytellers group.
