This Registered Field Nurse (RFN) began her career in a small rural hospital. She worked in the emergency room, intensive care and obstetrics. She believes this varied background has helped her become a more effective home care nurse.
In a typical day, she travels 60 to 90 miles to visit four to six patients in their homes. The amenities of a hospital are not always available in these rural locations. So, she must think on her feet and adjust to each individual situation. Training in intravenous therapy, chemotherapy, antibiotics, nutritional feeding and wound care have made her a well-rounded registered nurse.
A career as a RFN means spending a lot of time in patients' homes. Having a positive attitude is a key part of this job: some patients are homebound and see very few people throughout the day. This nurse says she enjoys being a companion to her patients.
