Lockmaster #1081 - Tape Number: 1081

Career Profile:
Lockmaster #1081

This lockmaster began his career with a military background. After graduating from high school he worked at an army depot, then enlisted in the Marine Corps. When his tour completed, he found work as an electrician with the Army Corps of Engineers at a lock and dam site on the Mississippi River. He advanced to the position of assistant lockmaster and later to lockmaster. Most of his training came from his experience on the job, but he also has an associates degree.

He says, "Good work habits and a willingness to learn are excellent qualities for this kind of work." His primary responsibilities are to keep traffic moving through the site and to make sure that no one gets hurt. Safety is the key to this job. Another important element is the people. He loves interacting with fellow employees and the many visitors who tour the lock and dam each year.
